Effective assembly of AED response

With the proper training — and properly serviced AEDs — we can all respond confidently in a critical emergency.

Severo Pina started work like any other day on the paint assembly line at Prescient Company LLC. But that day took an unexpected turn when he went into sudden cardiac arrest while on the job.

Fellow Prescient employee Charlie Pennington wasted no time when he saw Severo struggling and immediately retrieved a Zoll AED 3 and attached the unit to him. The AED, which had been regularly serviced by Cintas, recommended and delivered one shock while also coaching Charlie on how to perform effective chest compressions during CPR.

Fortunately, Emergency Services arrived after eight minutes and everyone was relieved when Severo started to regain his heart rhythm. He was then transported to Duke University Hospital, where he underwent a successful triple bypass surgery. Today, Severo has fully recovered and says he is so grateful to be home with his family.

Without question, the quick actions taken by Charlie and the use of a well-maintained AED saved Severo’s life. And Cintas GM Lee Marshall says he couldn’t have been more honored to present Charlie with the well-deserved Pulse Award for his heroic act.

Every business should have professionally serviced life-saving devices that are easily accessible, and knowledgeable employees who are trained to use them.
